Cycling is a fantastic way to keep fit and commute quickly into town.
Cllr Martin Heatley
Cycling between the Weddington area of Nuneaton and the town centre will soon be easier thanks to a new cycle route being developed by Warwickshire County Council.
The new route will extend along Weddington Road and over the Leicester Road bridge, linking to an existing cycle route around the ring road.
The first stage of the scheme will be on-carriageway cycle lanes on Weddington Road, following the current surfacing work on this road. It is anticipated that the cycle route will fully open at the end of the year, with the installation of a new crossing for cyclists and pedestrians on Leicester Road, near the Trent Road junction. This will allow people cycling towards the town centre to avoid the Old Hinckley Road gyratory system.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Cycling is a fantastic way to keep fit and commute quickly into town. However, we recognise that in busy traffic it is sometimes down to us to make it a little easier for cyclists to make their journeys.
“As well as helping people to make journeys around town by bike, the new route will contribute towards National Cycle Network route 52 through Nuneaton. This strategic cycle route, being co-ordinated by sustainable transport charity Sustrans, will eventually extend from Warwick to Leicestershire.”
