Question symbol How can you justify an increase in Council Tax above inflation?

Answer symbol Inflation facing local government is different to that faced by the public as our spending pattern is different. For example:

~ Nearly 60% of our budget is spent on staff related costs, and nationally set pay awards are increasing above the 'Consumer Price Index' rate of inflation.
~ In addition to increasing staff costs, we are also facing significant increases in landfill tax and transport costs.
~ In addition to meeting pay and price inflation, we are also having to meet the increased cost from the rising number of people needing our services, particularly older people and looked-after children.
~ The progressive tax on every tonne of waste disposed of in landfill sites have increased from £24 per tonne in 2007/2008 to £32 per tonne in 2008/2009. This has meant we have had to allow an extra £121,000 above inflation in 2008/2009 to meet the increased cost of disposing household waste.
