Nuneaton is the home town of the author Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot, and is very proud of its historic associations. Visitors can follow the George Eliot trail or even download a podcast on this famous literary genius. See the following link for details.
History
Nuneaton's name comes from a 12th century Benedictine nunnery from which much of the town grew around. Prior to this it was a settlement known as 'Etone'. The first recorded use of the modern name was in 1247 when a document recorded it as 'Nonne Eton'.
Situated on the fringe of the Warwickshire coal fields, industries in the town have been ribbon weaving and engineering in addition to mining. The town grew rapidly following the industrial revolution due to its large textile industry, and further developed with the growth of manufacturing in Coventry and Birmingham for which it is largely now a commuter town due to its good transport links.
Due to munitions factories located in Nuneaton, the town suffered heavy bombing damage during World War II and much of the town centre was rebuilt after the war.

Attractions in and around Nuneaton include the
George Eliot NHS Museum, Arbury Hall and Chilvers Coton Craft and Heritage Centre, Astley Book Farm and Dobbies Garden World and Plantasia lie further afield on roads to nearby towns.
The new multi-million pound Rope Walk Shopping Centre opened in August 2005, and is by far one of the biggest developments in the towns history. It offers an exciting and vibrant range of new shops and services, and complements the already good range present within the town centre, such as at Abbeygate Shopping Centre situated in the heart of Nuneaton.
The Nuneaton Carnival Procession & Gala is possibly Warwickshire's largest Carnival and takes place on the third Saturday of June every year. Full of noise, fun, arena attractions and the odd celebrity guest!
