Accessibility
Warwickshire Website Speech Enabled

The Warwickshire County Council website is now speech enabled, allowing you to have the contents on the site read aloud to you by your computer. This is made possible by a Windows browser plug in software called Browsealoud which is free to download to your computer.

Why speech enable the Warwickshire Website?
At Warwickshire County Council we are strongly committed to ensuring that the information and services on the website are easily accessible and available to all members of the community. No one should be excluded from our site or inhibited in any way from accessing information or services available on the website. With this in mind we want the website to be as easy to read as possible. Browsealoud allows people who find it difficult to read to be able to access the content on our website with ease by reading words, from the web page, aloud. This includes those who have visual impairments, dyslexia, learning difficulties and also those for whom English is not their first language.

How does it work?
In order to use Browsealoud you need to download the Browsealoud software, which is a small browser plug-in, available by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. Once it has been installed you are ready to hear content from every page of our website. As you move your cursor over the text it is read out aloud to you. The software will also read hyperlinks and menus, making navigation around the website much easier, as well as allowing you to read PDFs in Adobe version 6.0 onwards. The software is designed for use with Internet Explorer 4.0 onwards or Netscape Navigator.

Browsealoud will also allow you to listen to content on any other website which is speech enabled such as the BBC UK website.

Customising Browsealoud
Browsealoud can be customised to suit your preferences, allowing you to control whether the voice is male or female, the speed at which text is read as well as the pitch and volume of the reader. Settings can be changed by clicking on the Browsealoud icon in your system tray (next to the clock) in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. Simply right click on the icon and choose 'open browsealoud settings' from the menu.
